PICTURE: Disturbed from Bracken by day at Ostler's Plantation, near Woodall Spa, Lincolnshire, July 2011.

DISTRIBUTION: This species is common over most of the British Isles.

WING SPAN: 14mm to 22mm.                                             STATUS: Resident.

FLIGHT PERIOD: The adults are on the wing from May through to September, I suspect in two or more overlapping broods. There is not a lot of information available on the life cycle of this species. Although mainly nocturnal and attracted to light, they are easily disturbed by day.

LARVAL PERIOD: When mature the larvae are about 10mm to 14mm in length. They feed on detritus in birds nests, and fur or woollen remains from animals.

HABITAT: They inhabit wooded area's, and well established hedgerows etc.

FOOD PLANT/S: They feed on detritus in birds nests, and fur or woollen remains from animals.

SIMILAR SPECIES: There are some similar micro species.
