DISTRIBUTION: This species of sawfly is widely distributed throughout the British Isles, and is quite common especially in the south.

 

WING SPAN: 19mm to 21mm.                                             STATUS: Resident.         

FLIGHT PERIOD: The adults are on the wing from April through to June. they inhabit scrubby places where the larval food plant occur. The hairs on the adults vary in colour from pale to dark brown.               

LARVAL PERIOD: They feed on hawthorn and spin a tough cocoon, in which they pupate. When emerging the sawfly cuts the top off the cocoon, leaving a neat hole.

 

HABITAT: They inhabit scrubby places where the larval food plant occur.

FOOD PLANT/S: They feed on hawthorn.                                         

SIMILAR SPECIES: There are other similar sawflies.
