DISTRIBUTION: This species has been extending its range in recent years, and is found mainly in southern England and south Wales. It is also found in the north east of England.
WING SPAN: 53mm to 58mm. STATUS: Resident FLIGHT PERIOD: Butterflies are single brooded and are on the wing in late June, or early July and through into late September. LARVAL PERIOD: Caterpillars can be found from late August, or early September through to May of the following year. They feed on Sheeps-fescue Grass and probably some other species of wild grasses. The pupae pale brown, and fairly plain in appearance.
HABITAT: Habitats are unimproved grass land on chalk, or limestone. They are also found on road side grass verges, railway embankments and coastal grass land. FOOD PLANT/S: They feed on Sheeps-fescue Grass and probably some other species of wild grasses. SIMILAR SPECIES: None. |
