DISTRIBUTION: These hoverflies are resident, and quite common in Britain, numbers are re-enforced some years by mass migrations from the continent.
WING SPAN: 19mm to 25mm. STATUS: Resident. FLIGHT PERIOD: Adults of this species are on the wing from about mid spring, throughout the summer and into autumn. The adult hoverflies feed on pollen and nectar. LARVAL PERIOD: The larvae of this species consume many aphids, some times more than five hundred.
HABITAT: They inhabit parks, gardens, wood land, hedgerows and other places where the food plants grow. FOOD PLANT/S: The adult hoverflies feed on pollen and nectar, and the larvae of this species consume many aphids. SIMILAR SPECIES: This hoverfly is fairly easy to identify, being fairly different from related species. different |
