DISTRIBUTION: These hoverflies are widespread residents, and are fairly common in Britain as far north as Yorkshire. They are rarely seen further north.
WING SPAN: 14mm to 18mm. STATUS: Resident. FLIGHT PERIOD: Adults of this species are found in open area's where umbellifers grow. They are on the wing from April through to November, and are more common in late July and early August. LARVAL PERIOD: The larvae of this species live on various species of umbellifers, and feed on aphids.
HABITAT: They inhabit parks, gardens, wood land, hedgerows and other places where the food plants grow. FOOD PLANT/S: The adult hoverflies feed on pollen and nectar, and the larvae of this species consume many aphids. SIMILAR SPECIES: There are other similar species. |
