DISTRIBUTION: The is quite a common resident species throughout most of England and Wales. It is scarcer in northern England and Scotland, there are only a few records from Ireland. Migrants from Europe also arrive on our shores during the summer.

 

WING SPAN: 14mm to 18mm.                                              STATUS: Resident.         

FLIGHT PERIOD: They are on the wing from late March through into November, peaking from July to September.

LARVAL PERIOD: The larvae feed on aphids.

 

HABITAT: They inhabit open flowery area's such as gardens, parks, flowery meadows, road side verges, embankments etc.

FOOD PLANT/S: The adult hoverflies feed on pollen and nectar, and the larvae of this species consume many aphids.

SIMILAR SPECIES: There are other similar species.
