DISTRIBUTION: Moths of this species are fairly common, and resident in the southern half of England, Wales and the Midlands. They are less common, and localised in northern England and southern Ireland. There is some variation of the width, and intensity of the the middle stripes across the fore and hind wings.

 

WING SPAN: 26 to 29mm.                                             STATUS: Resident.         

FLIGHT PERIOD: This species is double brooded and is on the wing from June to October, in overlapping broods. They fly after dark resting at times on grass stems etc, and come to light occasionally in small numbers. Moths can easily be disturbed during the day, or found at rest within sheds and barns etc.

LARVAL PERIOD: The mature caterpillar is about 19 mm in length. They can be found feeding on privet, and some low growing plants. Eggs hatch in early September and the larvae mature in May of the following spring.

 

HABITAT: They inhabit hedgerows, waste ground, coastal sand dunes and other weedy area's.

FOOD PLANT/S: Privet, and some low growing plants.
