DISTRIBUTION: This species is common in England and Wales south of the Humber river. In England, and north of the Humber it is fairly common in Yorkshire, Durham and Northumberland. In Lancashire and Cumbria it is found mainly close to the west coast line. There have been a few records from two small parts of Scotland, one on the west coast, and one on the north east coat.

WING SPAN: 43mm to 51mm.             BODY LENGTH: 51mm to 60mm .              STATUS: Resident.

FLIGHT PERIOD: This species emerges around the middle of June, and is on the wing until late September, or early October.

LARVAL PERIOD: Eggs hatch in the following spring and the larvae takes two to three years to mature. Larvae sometimes walk a few feet away from the waters edge, to find a suitable emergence perch.

HABITAT: This species inhabits lowland area's, and favours well vegetated neutral, or alkaline standing waters waters. Garden ponds and small over grown pools are among its habitats.

FOOD PLANT/S: Various species of invertebrates.                                          

SIMILAR SPECIES: Immature males could be mistaken for the Common Hawker.
