DISTRIBUTION: This species was originally a migrant from the continent. Since it has extended its range and is now a resident breeding species. This species is found throughout England, and parts of Wales from the Humber southwards. They are also to be found along the south, and south eastern coast of Ireland It continues to expand its range, and become established in a small area of north east England.

WING SPAN: 37mm to 40mm.             BODY LENGTH: 43mm to 49mm .              STATUS: Resident.

FLIGHT PERIOD: This species is on the wing from late July through to October, some times as late as early November.

LARVAL PERIOD: The eggs over winter and hatch in the following spring. Larvae mature rapidly and emerge in late summer and autumn in the same year. Emergence usually takes place at night on plant stems at the waters edge. Immature adults stay away from water for about ten days, and then return to the water to breed on maturing.

HABITAT: This species inhabits non acidic ponds, pools and slow moving water such as dykes.

FOOD PLANT/S: Various species of invertebrates.                                          

SIMILAR SPECIES: The Southern Migrant Hawker is similar, but is a more striking blue. Also it has more blue in the thorax, and less yellow markings.
