PICTURE: Seen in the BC Garden at Chambers Farm Wood, nr Bardney, Lincolnshire, May 2011.

DISTRIBUTION: This species is widespread south of the Humber river, but it is slowly expanding its range northwards.

WING SPAN: 33mm to 37mm.             BODY LENGTH: 22mm to 28mm .              STATUS: Resident.

FLIGHT PERIOD: This species emerges as early as mid May, and occasionally earlier in warm springs. and can be on the wing into July.

LARVAL PERIOD: After two to three weeks the eggs hatch, and the hairy larvae in the bottom sediment of the pool. Larvae take from one to three years to emerge as adult dragonflies, depending upon annual, and season variations.

HABITAT: They quickly colonise new pools, and older choked ponds that have been recently dredged. This species favours still water such as ponds, small lakes and ditches.

FOOD PLANT/S: Various species of invertebrates.                                          

SIMILAR SPECIES: The Keeled and the Black-tailed Skimmers are similar in appearance.
